Around the World of Pro Wrestling 9/16/26: News, CMLL, NWA & The Lapsed Fan.

Ed: “Fans, welcome back to the sports desk — pull up a chair, settle in, and get comfortable, because we’ve got a full slate of action to walk through today. From Mexico City’s high‑flying chaos to the NWA’s wild nights in Philadelphia, this week has been packed, and we’re going to break down every twist, every title shake‑up, and every storyline that kept the wrestling world buzzing.”

“Before we dive into CMLL and the NWA, let’s start with the headlines that set the tone for the entire week — stories that reached across promotions and had everybody talking.”

Headlines

Maya World health update From the sports desk, Ed: Word coming out of AEW is that former TBS Champion Maya World recently underwent a medical procedure and is off the road for now. The expectation inside the company is optimistic—there’s no firm timetable, but the hope is she’ll be back sooner rather than later. She’d just wrapped a strong run, including winning the TBS title from Hikaru Shida at Redemption and later dropping it to CMLL’s Persephone at All In London after interference from Britt Baker. Her last bout before the procedure was a six‑woman tag on the September 9 “Dynamite: Rebel Heart” special, teaming with Hyan and Thunder Rosa against Baker, Shida, and Persephone.

Tony Schiavone honors Bill Dundee Gordon: Over at the microphone stand, Tony Schiavone took time on his “What Happened When” show to salute the late Bill Dundee, who passed away at 82. Tony praised Dundee as one of wrestling’s sharpest minds, crediting him with helping shape Memphis’ Continental Wrestling Association, building teams like the Midnight Express and Rock ’n’ Roll Express, and contributing behind the scenes to classic angles involving Jerry Lawler—possibly even the famous Andy Kaufman program. He framed Dundee as a quiet architect of many Crockett-era stories that fans still talk about today.

Kota Ibushi to undergo surgery Ed: And in a tough but defiant note, Kota Ibushi has revealed he’s heading back into the hospital for another surgery on the femur he broke during an AEW Collision match with Josh Alexander nearly a year ago. Doctors plan to remove the current hardware and replace it with stronger plates after determining the existing ones weren’t holding up. Ibushi admitted he’s exhausted by repeated surgeries, but he flatly refused to accept that this injury will end his career, vowing to return to AEW even if the timetable now stretches beyond his earlier hope of late 2026.

National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) – Week in review

Ed: Now, let’s bring it back to the sports desk and talk about the NWA, where the 78‑branded shows and Powerrr episodes have leaned heavily into character‑driven stipulations and title matches.

NWA Powerrr – September 12, 2026 (2300 Arena, Philadelphia – NWA 78 episode)

Gordon: This particular Powerrr from the 2300 Arena had three big tent‑poles: a women’s TV title match, a National Championship ladder match, and a Knights of the Round Table main event.

NWA World Women’s TV Championship

Gisele Shaw (c, with Lou D’Angeli) vs. “The Supreme” Sirena Veil (with Paige Collett)

  • Stipulation: TV title rules, 6:05 time limit.
  • Story: Shaw came out aggressive, controlling much of the early going. Veil, backed by Paige Collett, used strikes and submissions—at one point cinching in an armbar and later hitting a modified backstabber—to nearly steal it. Interference from Collett and chaos on the floor escalated as the clock wound down.
  • Finish: In the closing seconds, Veil finally landed her Bloodbath finisher and scored the pin with just one second left on the clock, capturing the Women’s TV Championship in dramatic fashion.

Ed: And even with the loss, the show made clear that “The Quintessential Diva” Gisele Shaw has signed officially with the NWA, so her story in the promotion is just beginning.

Ladder match for the NWA National Championship

Bryan Idol (c) vs. Mike Mondo vs. Slade

  • Setup: Idol defended against former champion Mike Mondo and his own tag partner Slade, with Aron Stevens lurking at ringside and stirring trouble.
  • Match notes:
    • Mondo and Slade initially worked together, using the ladder as a weapon to punish Idol, including shots to the midsection and a bulldog onto the steel.
    • Mondo jawed with Idol’s mother at ringside, drawing heat and adding personal stakes.
    • As the match progressed, the alliance between Mondo and Slade frayed—each tried to climb the ladder, pulling the other down, echoing the “failure to communicate” line the recap referenced.
    • Idol fought back with cutters and suplexes, while Mondo attempted a diving headbutt from the ladder and missed badly when Idol rolled away.
  • Finish: Stevens tried to insert himself with his loaded glove, but was ultimately knocked off the ladder. Idol managed to outlast both challengers and retrieve the belt, retaining the National Championship and keeping his “Looks That Kill” moniker intact.

Gordon: That ladder match doubled as a character piece—Stevens manipulating his own stable, Mondo antagonizing the crowd, and Idol surviving a two‑on‑one scenario.

Knights of the Round Table – “Round Tables” match

King Trevor Murdoch The First & The Royal Court (Squire Franks, Sir Michael the Duke of Knox, Jacob the Necromancer) vs. The Federation of Champions (The Slimeballz, Buster, Lockjaw Drake)

  • Stipulation: To win, you must send an opponent through a round table—rectangular tables don’t count, which became a running gag throughout the match.
  • Early action:
    • Lockjaw Drake and Squire Franks opened, with Aron Stevens interfering early and promptly being ejected by the referee.
    • The Slimeballz put Franks through a rectangular table, which did not end the match, prompting the announcers to explain the geometry to the Philly crowd.
    • Jacob the Necromancer tried “casting spells” only to be cut off and slammed through another non‑round table by Buster.
  • Mid‑match chaos:
    • Backstage‑style brawling spilled to the ramp, with King Trevor and Sir Michael delivering high/low attacks and smashing Drake through yet another rectangular table.
    • Aron Stevens reappeared in Templar knight gear, sneaking back into the fray.
    • Chantz hit a dive onto the pile on the floor.
    • May Valentine made a surprise return in a white dress, attacking Stevens and paying off the jilted‑bride storyline.
  • Finish:
    • Duke of Knox drove the Slimeballz through a table in the corner.
    • Jacob used powder to blind Buster, Franks followed with a chair shot, and King Trevor added another chair strike, sending Buster crashing off the structure onto an actual round table.
    • With Buster going through the correct table shape, the Royal Court claimed victory.

Ed: The visual of the 2300 Arena rising for King Trevor’s entrance—full regalia, fire and ice motif—gave the whole thing a modern territory flavor, mixing comedy, spectacle, and violence.

Promos and angles on the episode

Gordon: Between matches, Powerrr set up future NWA 78 bouts:

  • Pastor C‑Lo & Pretty Boy Smooth: Pastor C‑Lo promised that Pretty Boy Smooth would win next week’s five‑man match to become number one contender to the NWA Worlds Title.
  • Heath’s debut: Heath announced his arrival in the NWA and his intention to chase the Ten Pounds of Gold, citing his need to provide for his kids. He’s slated for that same five‑man contender’s match against Pretty Boy Smooth, JR Kratos, Jack Talos, and Effy.
  • Jack Talos & Daisy Kill: Talos, with Daisy Kill, brushed off his brutal dog collar match with Eric Smalls as “just having a good time,” then looked ahead to the contender’s bout.
  • Mortons vs. Alex Taylor: Ricky and Kerry Morton proposed a Texas Death Match against Alex Taylor, with Ricky aiming to settle scores after Taylor turned on them. Taylor later responded alongside NWA World Champion “Thrillbilly” Silas Mason, saying he’s ready for the Mortons and that “2 Hot to Trot” will bring the fight.
  • Country Gentlemen & Joe Cazana on The Carson Drake Experience: The NWA World Tag Team Champions discussed their European tour and upcoming defense against former champions Blunt Force Trauma, promising to do it “by the book,” echoing Papa Joe Cazana’s catchphrase.

Ed: All told, that Powerrr episode functioned as both payoff—title changes, big gimmick match—and a launchpad for next week’s NWA 78 card.

News and rumors involving CMLL and NWA talent

Ed: Let’s tie the bow on the week’s chatter around these rosters and their orbit.

  • CMLL’s women’s scene intersecting AEW: Persephone, CMLL World Women’s Champion, recently defeated Maya World for the AEW TBS Title at All In London, and then appeared again in the six‑woman tag on September 9. That cross‑promotion keeps CMLL’s women’s division in the international spotlight and reinforces the relationship between AEW and CMLL.
  • International guests in CMLL: Names like PAC, Mike Bailey, Zack Sabre Jr., Maika, Starlight Kid, and Mei Seira appearing in CMLL show ongoing collaboration with Japanese and global promotions, fueling speculation about future tournaments or joint cards.
  • NWA talent influx: Heath’s arrival, Gisele Shaw’s signing, and the continued use of characters like Pastor C‑Lo, Pretty Boy Smooth, Jack Talos, and Effy suggest the NWA is leaning into a deep ensemble cast, with rumors pointing to more outside names being eyed as it rolls on.

Gordon: In short, both companies are using partnerships and character‑heavy booking to stay visible in a crowded landscape.

The Lapsed Fan podcast – this week’s note

Ed: Before we close the sports desk, let’s talk audio—specifically, The Lapsed Fan. https://thelapsedfan.com

Gordon: The Lapsed Fan continues its sprawling “Complete Hulk Hogan” journey, currently deep into the early‑’80s chapters. Recent episodes clock in at marathon lengths—four, five, even six hours—digging into Hogan’s 1980–1982 run, territory stops, and major stadium shows like “Showdown at Shea,” plus interviews with figures such as Stan Hansen, Tony Atlas, Larry Zbyszko, and others who crossed paths with Hogan in that era.

Ed: For fans of CMLL, NWA, and the broader history, it’s the kind of long‑form, detail‑heavy storytelling that pairs nicely with a week of ladder matches, round tables, and international trios. When the bell rings on this week, you’ve got plenty of tape to roll and plenty of history to revisit.

“According to a report from Fightful Select, indie wrestler Hayden Backlund has signed with the NWA after spending the last several months competing for the promotion. During that run, Backlund appeared in a National Title match and also competed in this year’s Crockett Cup. He had previously been a regular on NWA Exodus events as well.

Backlund, who hails from the Buffalo area, also gained early-career experience in AEW, where he worked several matches against talent including Best Friends and Miro, among others.”

“According to a report from Fightful Select, 19-year-old independent wrestler Liviyah has signed with the National Wrestling Alliance. While additional details regarding the deal are still emerging, the signing reportedly became official within the last few months.

Despite her young age, Liviyah has already built an impressive resume on the independent scene, competing for over two and a half years and amassing close to 200 matches. She has also become a familiar face at Wrestling Open events.

Liviyah previously appeared at the NWA TV tapings in February, where she challenged for both the NWA World Women’s Championship and the NWA Women’s Television Championship.”

Silas Mason and Bryan Idol Go Face to Face Before Next Week’s Rematch

Credit: nationalwrestlingalliance.com

Mason told the challenger, “Since my two best friends didn’t advance in the Crockett Cup, the only thing I got to look forward to is kicking your ass all over this arena.”

Idol responded to the champ with, “I know I got what it takes.”

The champ ended the confrontation with, “We’ll see, boy, we’ll see.”

🎙️ Rundown — NWA & CMLL

Presented by Ed & Gordon

🟦 DESK INTRO

Ed: “Fans, the action from the National Wrestling Alliance and CMLL this past week has been hotter than a depot stove! Powerrr kept the COMET era rolling, and Super Viernes lit up Arena México with the kind of electricity only lucha libre can deliver!”

Gordon: “Indeed. A most eventful week — championships threatened, rivalries sharpened, and momentum shifting across both promotions.”

🟥 NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE (NWA)

⭐ Current Direction

The Crockett Cup is looming, the World Title picture is boiling, and the COMET era continues to define the new identity of Powerrr.

🟧 NWA POWERRR — MAY 9, 2026 (FULL MATCH‑BY‑MATCH REVIEW)

📺 COMET TV — Studio‑style presentation, tight pacing, heavy storyline focus.

Location: OC Theatre in Forney, TX. Commentators: Joe Galli and Tim Storm with Da Pope.

🔥 MATCH 1 — Crockett Cup Quarterfinal Match: The Good Brothers (Doc Gallows and “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson)(No. 2 seed) vs. The SlimeBallz (Sage Chantz and Tommy Rant, with Aron Stevens) (No. 10 Seed)

Anderson starts the match by chopping Rant. Good Brothers dominate with Slimeballz trying to make a comeback before Gallows hits a roundhouse on Chantz. A Magic Killer and the Good Brothers advance.

Kyle Davis joins the Good Brothers in the ring where The SlimeBallz offer a Too Slimy in congratulations, but Anderson and Gallows just walk away.

Ed: “Fans, that’s raw horsepower on display!”

The Southern Six discuss their elimination in the Crockett Cup. Alex Taylor and Kerry Morton argue until NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Silas Mason sets them straight.

🔥 MATCH 2 — Crockett Cup Quarterfinal Match: The Titans of Calamity (Jack Talos and Ren Ayabe) (No. 16 Seed) vs. El Dragón Nihan and Thom Latimer (No. 9 Seed)

The Titans are coming off of an upset of the NWA World Tag Team Champions, The Immortals. Latimer is pursuing his first Crockett Cup despite a ton of success in the NWA. He and Ayabe start out shoving, Latimer with a low bridge sending Ayabe outside. Latimer off of the top turnbuckle to the outside. Talos makes the save after an impact DDT. Latimer is unable to slam the big man. The match is interrupted by David Crockett talking about the Road Warriors winning the Crockett Cup. We are back with the Titans working over Latimer. Shades of the Hart Foundation get them a 2 count. Nihan with the blind tag and he takes out the AJPW World Tag Team Champions. Talos with a choke slam and the Titans with Ride the Lightning for the 3 count.

Gordon: “A most determined effort from the former champion.”

Wreckingball Legursky is on the Carson Drake Experience where he is mistreated by the host and jumped by the Wrestling Machines.

Damien Fenrir congratulates Alex Misery on his victory but it is not heartfelt as Fenrir exhibits his oversized ego.

Natalia Markova replaces Tim Storm on commentary.

🔥 MATCH 3 — The Burke Invitational Gauntlet

Seven women compete in this gauntlet where you can be eliminated by pinfall, submission or over the top rope to become the number one contender to the NWA Women’s World Championship and an anytime, anywhere opportunity at the championship. Hollyhood Haley J and Kylie Paige start out. Haley hits Paige with a boot to the face as the ref checks her wrestling shoes. Hollyhood with the upperhand when Shay Karmichael of Texas Style Wrestling joins the gauntlet. Karmichael tries to send Haley J over the top rope when Gretta is added to the match. After a break Gretta eliminates Haley J and Karmichael in quick succession. Gretta gets Kylie up but is interrupted by the entrance of Kenzie Paige. The sisters double team the monster until getting caught by a double clothesline. Morgan Mercey of NWA Texas joins the match making it the Paige sisters and two giants. Gretta eliminates Mercy over the top. Herra joins the match. Herra with shortarm clotheslines to one Kylie who is saved by Kenzie. Kenzie eliminates Herra but is betrayed by her sister and eliminated. Kylie and Gretta are left as we go to break. Back from break Tiffany Nieves is the last entrant. Kylie is double teamed and has to contend with TV-MA’s Miss Starr on the outside. Miss Starr is kicked out of ringside and kicks the ref in the lower abdominal region. Paige puts up a fight but is hit by a huge choke slam. Gretta puts Nieves on Paige who is pinned and eliminated. Gretta climbs over the top rope to eliminate herself giving Nieves the victory and an anytime, anywhere opportunity at the Burke held by Markova.

Ed: “Fans, that’s a collision waiting to happen!”

🟥 National Wrestling Alliance

NWA Powerrr — April 28, 2026 (Roku finale before COMET)

This episode was positioned as the last Powerrr on The Roku Channel before the move to COMET and the Crockett Cup, with a clear focus on setting up contenders and giving key acts a tune‑up.

Key story beats:

  • Wrecking Ball Legursky vs. Dr. Viktor (w/ Ms. Starr) Billed as a No. 1 contender’s match for the Ten Pounds of Gold, this was framed as Dr. Viktor being “convinced” by Ms. Starr that winning would impress Women’s TV Champion Tiffany Nieves. Legursky dominated early, battering Viktor inside and outside the ring. A missed charge sent Wrecking Ball head‑first into the post; Viktor barely beat the count, giving him the countout win and the shock No. 1 contendership.Nieves appeared afterward, clearly intrigued, while Viktor sold every bit of the beating—“a sore winner” in every sense.
  • Good Brothers tune‑up & Crockett Cup hype The show was promoted around The Good Brothers getting ring time before the Crockett Cup, plus a “one‑of‑a‑kind” match in the ongoing feud between Daisy Kill and Eric Smalls, keeping that undercard rivalry hot heading into the tag tournament.
  • Ten Pounds of Gold picture The commentary hammered home that the winner of Legursky/Viktor would get a shot at World Heavyweight Champion “Thrillbilly” Silas Mason, tightening the world‑title focus going into the COMET era.

NWA Powerrr #256 Results

Tag Team Match
The Good Brothers (Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows) def. The Rewind Society (Samuel C & VHS).

NWA World Women’s Tag Team Title #1 Contendership Match
Hollyhood Haley J & Sirena Veil def. Pretty Empowered (Kenzie Paige & Kylie Paige) — Sirena Veil pinned Kylie Paige, earning her a title shot at the Crockett Cup.

Shanghai Painstick Lethal Ladder Match
Daisy Kill def. Eric Smalls — Daisy Kill ascended the ladder to victory.

Ed: “Fans, only in the NWA do you get a man beaten from pillar to post and still walking out as the number one contender!”

Gordon: “A most fortuitous outcome for Dr. Viktor—and a potentially hazardous one for the reigning champion if Dr. Vik didn’t have to wrestle twice on one show.”

NWA direction, news & rumors

  • Network move: Powerrr is transitioning from The Roku Channel to COMET, with back‑to‑back new episodes advertised for May 1–2, signaling a renewed TV push.
  • Crockett Cup focus: Tag‑team positioning (Good Brothers, ongoing feuds like Daisy Kill/Eric Smalls) is clearly being tuned for the upcoming Crockett Cup.
  • World title scene: Dr. Viktor’s fluke‑but‑official No. 1 contender status gives Silas Mason a challenger who’s storyline‑battered but opportunistic—classic NWA territory framing.

Ed: “The table’s set, fans—new TV home, Crockett Cup on deck, and a very unlikely man staring at the Ten Pounds of Gold.”

🟥 NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE (NWA)

Powerrr — April 21, 2026

Full Review & Analysis

The April 21 edition of NWA Powerrr from the PowerrrStation in Tampa delivered a tight, territory‑style show that spotlighted rising prospects, showcased the Junior Heavyweight division, and closed with a heated No Limits main event. The episode leaned heavily on in‑ring action, with several matches giving younger talent meaningful shine.

🥇 Junior Heavyweight #1 Contender’s Triple Threat

Damian Fenrir def. Ethan Tornadeau & Alex Misery This opener was fast, athletic, and exactly what the Junior division is supposed to be. Tornadeau hit the flashiest offense — including a gorgeous shooting star press — but Fenrir’s power and timing won out. He snatched Tornadeau off a pin attempt and drilled him with the Lightning Bomb for the victory. Fenrir sold a knee injury throughout, which became important immediately after.

Verdict: Strong opener, great pacing, and Tornadeau looked like a future star.

🏆 NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship

Spencer Slade (c) def. Damian Fenrir Fenrir went straight from his Triple Threat win into a title match, still limping. Aron Stevens made sure the champ had every advantage, tripping Fenrir behind the referee’s back. Slade worked the knee relentlessly, mixing suplexes with grinding mat control. Fenrir fought back with heart — including a top‑rope crossbody for a near fall — but his knee buckled on a shotgun lariat attempt. Slade locked in the SladeLock for the submission.

Verdict: Classic “injured challenger” story. Fenrir gained credibility even in defeat.

💀 Bonez (w/ Brandon McCord) def. Gaagz the Gymp

A short, character‑driven match. Bonez looked dominant, and Gaagz played his usual chaotic role. Not a standout bout, but it served its purpose.

💥 Pretty Boy Smooth (w/ Pastor C‑Lo) def. Big Cuzzo

A heavyweight clash with some rough edges. The post‑match angle was the real highlight: Trevor Murdoch stormed in and hit Smooth with a top‑rope bulldog, setting up a future feud.

🚂 Pretty City Express def. Jack ’n Eddie

CLAS & Devin Reno continue to build momentum. The big story here is that Jack Valor and Eddie Grayson are only 18 years old, and they held their own against a polished team. A promising showcase for the youngest prospects on the roster.

🔥 MAIN EVENT — No Limits Match

Bryan Idol def. Carnage This was a wild, weapons‑legal brawl built around Idol seeking revenge after Carnage cost him a title shot. Carnage dominated large stretches and nearly powerbombed Idol out of the ring to the floor. The finish came when Thom Latimer ran in with a chair to save Idol — legal under No Limits rules — allowing Idol to capitalize and score the win.

Verdict: Carnage looked like a monster, Idol looked gutsy, and Latimer’s involvement keeps the storyline moving.

🎯 Overall Show Rating: 7.5/10

Strengths:

  • Strong Junior division storytelling
  • Young talent showcased effectively
  • Main event delivered intensity and storyline progression

Weaknesses:

  • One mid‑card match dragged
  • Idol needing help may undercut his babyface momentum (as noted by fan analysts)

Final Take: A classic, territory‑flavored episode with meaningful matches, rising stars, and a main event that felt chaotic in all the right ways.

Ed: “Fans, that was a pier‑six brawl if I’ve ever seen one!”

Gordon: “Quite so. A most brutal affair with championship implications.”

📰 CMLL News & Rumors

Injuries at the April 20th show including Mistico. thecubsfan.com reported; “Tiger – the Puebla Black Tiger – seemed to have a medical incident after the finish of his match. He took a top rope frankensteiner with no obvious issue on the landing, but his eyes were closed, and he didn’t move much, taking the finishing pin. Referee Metalico was concerned after the pin, checked on Tiger, and then seemed to move away like he was OK. Tiger’s arms continued to shake while he was otherwise motionless on the mat. A crowd cut later, a paramedic and a doctor were in the ring, attending to Tiger as he continued to shake. More medical personnel followed, and all seemed very concerned. CMLL went to long crowd shots and showed the ring very little until Black Tiger was loaded onto a stretcher. Luchadors do sometimes sell in this situation, but the urgency in the medical care and that he kept shaking even as they were checking on him made it appear genuine. There was no medical update on him from CMLL. Most of the usual media outlets that cover Puebla shows didn’t happen to cover this one, or at least didn’t post anything about it. I couldn’t find anything on Facebook with more info. No one seemed that concerned except people watching the stream, so I guess we’ve got to cross our fingers and hope Tiger was doing a work for no reason and so well that he even fooled the doctors.

Mistico’s left leg injury here was obviously not as serious, but it also put some pieces together. Mistico and Volador should’ve had a singles match on this show, given what they set up last week. Clon and Mistico should’ve had a singles match in Coliseo a couple of weeks back. Hechicero and Mistico should’ve had that singles match in Vegas. Neither Mistico nor the doctor seems particularly surprised his leg was bugging him here; they got it wrapped quickly as if they’d been preparing it to be an issue. I think (and it has since also been suggested to me) that Mistico’s been working through an injury for a while. They’re trying to manage it while working tag matches, the Mistico/Hechicero match got changed because he can’t risk it in a long singles match, and the other singles matches didn’t happen for the same reason. It would be nice if CMLL had figured that out before putting Mistico in those matches, or at least explained why he wasn’t in them, but that seems to be the deal – Mistico’s hurt enough that he (and they) are being cautious with him, but not so much that they’re sitting him down. I hope that’s clear enough for the aggregators.”

Coming up on April 24th as reported by thecubsfan.com: “Reyna Isis was on the Homenaje a Dos Leyendas card, her first match since December. She was pulled off the show days before, with CMLL Informa announcing she was injured. She went on Instagram, saying it was fake news and that she was simply waiting for a doctor to sign off on clearance, which would take two weeks for unclear reasons. She’s now back about four weeks later.”

🎙️ DESK OUTRO

Ed: “Fans, while we await the Crockett Cup, Powerrr and Super Viernes show neither the NWA nor CMLL are slowing down.”

Gordon: “Indeed. A most compelling time across the wrestling landscape. And with that… so long from the wrestling world.”
